Morpheus8
Consultations offered at our five convenient locations in Harley Street, London, Princess Margaret Hospital, (Windsor), Spire Thames Valley, (Gerrards Cross), Kings' Oak Hospital, (Enfield) and Refresh Medispa, (Amersham)
Morpheus8 is a microneedling device equipped with radiofrequency (RF), an energy that provides a mild skin-tightening effect through the contraction of dermal collagen fibres. The microneedles themselves provoke more collagen fibre production, leading to the reduction of imperfections such as acne scars, rosacea, stretch marks, fine lines, and wrinkles. This two-in-one treatment causes overall skin rejuvenation, supporting youthful and healthy-looking skin.
With Morpheus8, you can undergo multiple sessions to achieve and maintain incredible results without the downtime of a more invasive cosmetic procedure. This mode of revitalization relies on your skin’s own healing processes, preventing the need for treatment with various anti-ageing creams and serums. A variation of the device called Morpheus8 Body is specialised for the skin of the body, which is thicker and overlies more subdermal fat tissue.
At the Refresh Cosmetic Surgery Medispa in Amersham (Refresh Medispa) we prioritise patient satisfaction and unmatched, high-quality care with the latest techniques and applications. Our practices are headed by the experience of Dr Maisam Fazel, a surgeon with a diverse background in both non-invasive and minimally invasive procedures. Dr Fazel is an active researcher in surgical publications and a teacher at the Royal College of Surgeons, making him exceptionally talented and skilled in his craft. The Science of Microneedling
Microneedling involves the use of incredibly thin needles. While most microneedling devices have needles around 0.5 to 3 mm in length, Morpheus8’s needles are more customizable and can penetrate at any depth between 0.5 to 8 mm. Longer needles can reach all areas of the dermis and invoke collagen from deep within. As the needles penetrate to this depth, the tiny resulting injuries- called micro injuries– signal the skin to speed up its healing processes. One inflammatory reaction, called fibroblast growth factor, causes a dramatic increase in fibroblast cells responsible for the creation of connective proteins like collagen and elastin. When these two proteins are in balance, the skin appears soft and radiant, maintaining a healthy recoil and texture.
The mechanical application of these needles also rearranges collagen and breaks down atrophic scar tissue, usually a result of skin infections such as chickenpox, acne, or other injuries. With atrophic scars, the skin appears abnormally indented. Microneedles, with or without radiofrequency (RF) energy, can stimulate better blood circulation to these tissues, a necessary part of restoring healthy-looking skin. (1)
What is RF Energy?
Radiofrequency is a type of electromagnetic energy with many uses in the field of surgery and cosmetic procedures. For example, surgeons often apply RF subdermally to destroy fibrous septae, strong connective bands that cause the appearance of cellulite. (2) Morpheus8’s RF energy administers gentle heat to the collagen fibres and causes them to contract, creating a minor skin-tightening effect that works alongside the collagen-induction process. Non-invasive methods that utilise radiofrequency have been shown to reduce fat without harming the skin. (3) This supports the claims that Morpheus8 can destroy minor fat deposits in areas of thinner skin. Outside of Morpheus8, Refresh offers non-invasive RF skin-tightening for those who want the benefits of more supple skin without the needles.
Benefits of Morpheus8
When in the hands of a highly trained technician, Morpheus8 can treat several types of skin conditions with minimal side effects. After sessions with this revolutionary device, patients can expect significant improvements in:
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Lax skin around the eyes and mouth
- Rough, dull skin
- Hyperpigmentation lesions, such as age spots
- Acne scars
- Rosacea
- Mild jowls
While Morpheus8 is gentle enough for facial skin, Morpheus8 Body is better equipped to eliminate fat in the hypodermis (deep dermis), stretch marks, deeper lines, and even cellulite.
Many patients are attracted to this treatment for a multitude of reasons outside of the obvious benefits and its versatility:
- It only requires topical or local anaesthesia.
- Patients can expect around 1 to 3 days of downtime.
- Skin rejuvenation results last up to 1 year after the initial series of sessions.
- Sessions only take a few minutes to an hour, depending on the size of the treatment area.
- We can create a customizable experience- offering a 24-needle tip for areas of the face and neck or a 12-needle tip for use in more delicate, soft areas.
- Morpheus8 Body has a 40-needle tip for more coverage and a speedier procedure.
- Most of all, it initiates and boosts the natural repairing mechanisms of your skin.

Preparation
Before your session, we will advise you to follow certain preparation instructions to promote a better experience and to keep your skin safe:
- Avoid sun exposure, tanning beds, and spray tans.
- Avoid waxing the treatment area.
- Avoid blood-thinning medications and supplements that can cause more bleeding and delayed healing.
- Consult Dr Fazel about an antiviral medication if you’ve ever had a viral infection in the treatment area; microneedling can increase your risk of another outbreak.
Procedure Steps
To begin, we will first cleanse your skin thoroughly to prevent the risk of infection. We will then give you topical or local anaesthesia; usually, if it’s a very large area, local anaesthesia is the best option. If you are uncomfortable at any point during the treatment, we can provide a local anaesthetic for more desensitisation than topical creams.
After the anaesthesia settles in, we will apply the window of the Morpheus8 device directly over your skin. The needles will gently press into the skin, transferring RF energy, and then they will move to an adjacent spot. You may have some pinpoint bleeding and redness, but these are normal reactions, and they will subside relatively quickly after your procedure. We will be sure to adjust the settings of the device so that the needles penetrate to the appropriate depth. The average time it takes to complete a session of Morpheus8 is about 30 minutes, but it could take as little as 15 minutes and as long as 1 hour.
Recovery and Results
Aftercare is incredibly important- you won’t see immediate results because recovery is the time when the most rejuvenation will occur. Your skin may remain itchy, red, and irritated for a few days, but non-prescription medications and/or a cooling fan can help relieve the side effects. During this time, you should only use gentle soap and avoid exfoliating or rubbing the area. You should keep yourself sweat-free and out of the sun. Dr. Fazel will prescribe an ointment to keep your skin free of infection and to boost the healing process. Usually, patients can begin using their regular skin care products after 3 days.
While you may begin to see improvements after your first session of microneedling, you will likely need more than one to resolve your skin issues. Many patients benefit from 3 sessions spaced 1 month apart from each other, but treatment plans can vary.
Corresponding & Complementary Procedures
FaceTite and BodyTite
In addition to its skin-tightening abilities, the electromagnetic waves of RF energy heat up and damage fat tissue. (4) FaceTite and BodyTite are two minimally invasive, radiofrequency-based devices designed specifically to promote tighter, slimmer contours. They can also be used to augment the results of Morpheus8. With FaceTite, your technician will inject tumescent anaesthesia just under the skin and apply the RF wand subcutaneously, gaining direct access to the targeted fat deposits. FaceTite can reduce the appearance of a double chin, provide more jawline definition, and create a firming effect on the cheeks and neck. BodyTite can treat the midsection, upper arms, thighs, flanks, back, and even breasts.
