A dermal filler is a skin rejuvenation treatment designed to smooth wrinkles and fine lines and replenish lost facial volume. The most popular types of dermal filler contain hyaluronic acid (HA), a naturally occurring compound that plumps areas of facial hollowness by attracting and storing water within the skin. Depending on your primary ageing concerns, we can use different filler formulations to revive the silky, dewy skin you desire in various areas of the face.
At Refresh Medispa in Amersham, Dr Maisam Fazel provides custom-tailored dermal filler injections to help patients achieve their desired look. Dr. Fazel uses his well-rounded expertise in facial anatomy and non-surgical specialities to create outstanding, natural-looking enhancements with the HA fillers Juvéderm, Restylane, and Teoxane.

Revive Your Skin With Hyaluronic Acid
Many of the temporary dermal filler products available are composed of hyaluronic acid. This substance is naturally found in the body, either to lubricate joints and tissues or to hydrate and volumise the skin. As we age, our natural levels of hyaluronic acid begin to deplete, which causes many signs of facial ageing. This change in skin composition, alongside reduced collagen and elastin in the skin, is one of the main causes of wrinkle development.
Luckily, dermal fillers containing hyaluronic acid can plump and fill as well as improve skin hydration, which is vital for supporting overall skin health. Research finds that due to its unique molecular structure and neutral pH, hyaluronic acid can bind up to 10,000 times more water than its volume, so only a small amount is required for anti-ageing treatments. (1) Hyaluronic acid remains stable and flexible within the dermis layer of the skin, the plane at which collagen and elastin are produced, helping trigger the production of these fibres as well. (2) With these dramatic changes to the makeup of the skin, HA dermal fillers can:
- Fill in fine lines and wrinkles
- Improve the appearance of nasolabial folds
- Volumise hollowed tear troughs
- Restore more youthful contours to the mid-face area
- Correct nasal asymmetries (liquid rhinoplasty)
- Soften and plump the lips
- Augment the chin
- Rejuvenate and improve skin texture
Benefits of Dermal Fillers
Dermal fillers are highly requested because they do not require an extensive commitment to reap their beautifying benefits. With the latest HA technology, patients can treat any area of the face and be confident that the filler will respond naturally with their facial features and movements. Aside from the aesthetic improvements, here are some of the advantages to this minimally invasive approach:
- The procedure takes about 15 minutes to complete.
- The HA solution contains lidocaine to make the treatment more comfortable.
- You can return to work and the gym immediately after.
- Injectors can safely administer HA directly into the lips.
- Results are instant and last anywhere between 6 and 18 months, depending on the specific formula.
- The body’s enzymes naturally break down and metabolise HA.
- When administered by a highly trained injector like Dr Fazel, injections are extremely safe and allergic reactions are rare.
Fillers Tailored to Your Needs
Dr. Fazel offers Juvéderm, Restylane, and Teoxane fillers. Each formulation has varying levels of cohesion and stability to suit the particular facial area it is targeting. With less cohesion, the filler can diffuse across a larger area of skin, whereas more cohesive fillers tend to gather more within one area, making them perfect for more noticeable projection and volume. Researchers create more stable fillers by molecularly changing the compound via crosslinking, a process that involves adding the 1,4-butanediol diglycidulether molecule to create larger HA molecules. (3) Fillers with more cross linked molecules are more resistant to movement and the forces of gravity, whereas those with less are more flexible and suitable for parts of the face with high movement.
Personal Consultation
During your consultation with Dr Fazel, he will ask you about your bothersome signs of ageing, and he will outline the results you can expect to attain with these simple injectable treatments. He will be sure to prescribe the right formulation of HA for each area of the face, ensuring that the compound stays stable and effective within the area. He will go over the subtle differences between Restylane, Teoxane, and Juvéderm and how they act uniquely within the skin.
Though HA is highly tolerated and suitable for the vast majority of patients, Dr Fazel understands that you still may have questions and concerns, so he will take time to address each one thoroughly. Finally, he will provide you with aftercare instructions and personalized skincare tips to promote skin health and prevent further ageing as the HA dissolves gradually.

Dermal Filler Treatment
Dr Fazel will cleanse the entire face before administering your filler injections. Next, he will mark where to inject each small amount of the compound, ensuring that it spreads evenly throughout the area. HA injections involve the use of extremely fine needles, so the procedure is virtually painless for most, save for a slight pinching sensation. After administering the HA in several locations of your choice, Dr. Fazel will use gloved fingertips to massage each area of the skin.
To finish up the procedure, he will coat your skin with a healing serum, allowing the skin to replenish moisture and recover with ease. It should help clear up any redness or inflammation. Immediately after, you can also apply ice to the sensitive areas to further reduce any expected swelling.
Recovery and Results
You will notice immediate anti-ageing effects right away after your dermal filler treatment, but you may also experience some mild inflammation, swelling, and discolouration at the injection sites. These side effects will slowly subside over the following days. You may have some small bumps just under the skin, but these will go away with daily massage. Until all sensitivity goes away, you should also refrain from rubbing the areas.
Depending on your chosen filler and your current skin condition, results will last anywhere from 6 to 18 months. Dr Fazel will give you aftercare instructions to help you maintain your results and prevent more wrinkles from settling in.
Corresponding & Complementary Procedures
Profhilo
Profhilo is an injectable HA treatment that is not considered a dermal filler but rather a “skin booster”. With this treatment, Dr Fazel can eliminate less severe wrinkles, promote overall skin health, and create a more subtle glowy appearance. Dr. Fazel can treat mild skin laxity using a combination of Profhilo and another dermal filler.
Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty
For a non-surgical, or “liquid” rhinoplasty, Dr Fazel can improve the nasal profile with temporary HA fillers. By volumising certain areas, he can eliminate the look of dorsal humps, crookedness, and narrowness for a smoother, more symmetrical appearance.
Liquid Facelift
A liquid facelift is a comprehensive rejuvenation procedure that uses facial fillers to treat ageing throughout the entire face. With skillfully applied plumping and wrinkle-erasing hyaluronic acid, Dr Fazel can mimic the elevating effects of a facelift but with softer results. Patients appreciate that the revitalising effects of a liquid facelift are instantly attainable and do not require downtime.
