About Tuberous Breast Correction
Breasts take various shapes and sizes due to genetic factors, hormonal changes, and developmental variations. Tubular or tuberous breasts are a relatively common congenital breast disorder that affects the shape of the breasts and nipples. The deformity typically manifests during adolescence and can persist into adulthood. The breasts are often constricted at the bottom with the areola being enlarged and having a protruding shape like a cone or a beak. (1) This can result in asymmetrical breasts and make it challenging to find suitable clothing or swimwear.
Often, individuals with this condition desire to reshape their breasts for improved volume and symmetry while addressing the position and size of the nipple-areolar complex, which may also appear prominent, puffy, or droopy. Due to the appearance of the breasts, the gap between them can appear larger than normal. Sometimes, only one breast is affected. (2)
Tubular breast correction is a specialised surgical procedure designed to improve the shape and aesthetic appearance of breasts that exhibit tubular breast deformity to achieve a more natural and balanced appearance. The goal of this surgery is not only cosmetic enhancement but also restoring confidence in individuals who feel self-conscious about their breast shape. (2)

Candidates

Any woman with this condition who is otherwise healthy may choose to benefit from tuberous breast correction. Tuberous breasts can sometimes be very mild, and some women may not be aware of it. Dr Fazel needs to identify and diagnose the condition before patients consider cosmetic breast surgery, as this needs to be taken into account when planning the treatment. Candidates should be in good general health without major medical issues that might impede healing, and patients who smoke or use other forms of nicotine should be willing to quit before and after their procedure.

Preparation
Once you decide to proceed with your tubular breast correction procedure, you will receive preparatory instructions. These cater to your unique goals and medical history, and following them closely will help to ensure a safe procedure with optimal results. While these differ for each patient, some common guidelines to follow include:
- Discontinuing any blood-thinning medications (e.g., aspirin, ibuprofen) as instructed.
- Avoiding smoking and refraining from nicotine products for at least four weeks before and after surgery (if applicable).
- Filling any prescriptions for medications needed post-surgery ahead of time.
- Arranging for someone to accompany you home following surgery, especially if sedation is used.
- Taking time off work and any physical activities to ensure ample rest during your recovery.
- Fasting for a period determined by Dr Fazel before the day of your procedure.
Procedure
Tuberous breast correction procedures incorporate techniques from various breast enhancement procedures, primarily breast lifts (mastopexy), nipple surgery, and breast augmentation. The precise combination of procedures required in your treatment can only be confirmed after an examination. In some cases, patients benefit from more than one procedure. The tubular breast correction procedure is typically performed under general anaesthesia.
Breast Lift
A breast lift, also known as mastopexy, is a common procedure that addresses breast ptosis (sagging). Breast ptosis is common for many women–often manifesting after pregnancy, weight fluctuations, hormonal changes–and gives the breasts a deflated, and aged appearance. Dr Fazel will make an incision to remove excess tissue from the breasts and tighten the chest muscles for a firmer, smoother appearance. The nipples may be repositioned at a higher or more centralised location.
Nipple Surgery
In tuberous breast corrections, Dr Fazel can incorporate different nipple surgery techniques, such as nipple reductions and areola reductions. Many patients with tuberous breasts feel as though their nipples are too large. In an areola reduction, Dr Fazel will remove some of the skin that surrounds the nipple to reduce the total areola size. In a nipple reduction, he will remove excess tissue on the nipple itself to sculpt an aesthetically pleasing nipple in shape, size, and colour. Both procedures are performed carefully to preserve natural nerve sensations.
Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation procedures focus on enhancing the shape and/or size of the breasts with implants or a fat transfer. Breast expanders may be used in tuberous breast corrections to slowly bring the breasts to the desired size, but this is not always necessary. For breast implant procedures, Dr Fazel will begin by making an incision on the breasts. Implants can be either saline-filled or silicone-filled. If you augment your breasts with a fat transfer, Dr Fazel will harvest fat from another site on your body via liposuction. (3) This harvested fat is processed and then re-injected into a few places on your breasts. (3)
Recovery
Post-operative care is crucial to ensure optimal healing. After your procedure, Dr Fazel will provide you with supportive garments to help reduce swelling and support the healing process. Some soreness, bruising, and swelling should be expected, and these can be mitigated through prescribed medications, light walks, rest, and wearing the designated compression garments. Patients should avoid strenuous activities for up to six weeks as their bodies heal. Return visits will allow Dr Fazel to monitor your progress and address any concerns. Most patients can return to light activities within two weeks but should be cautious until they receive clearance from Dr Fazel.
Results
With the completion of tubular breast correction, patients can expect drastic changes in the shape of their breasts, improved breast symmetry, a harmonious and natural look, and greater satisfaction with their body image. It is essential to remember that full results will become evident as swelling decreases and scars mature over months.
Corresponding Procedures
Many patients who receive breast implants require a breast implant removal or exchange procedure in the future. This is sometimes due to complications like capsular contracture, but more often, this is due to the implants nearing the end of the timeline of their recommended use or a desire to alter their breast shapes in a different way.

FAQ
What is tuberous breast deformity?
Tubular breast deformity is a condition characterised by breast tissue that develops in a tubular or conical shape rather than a full, round appearance, often leading to aesthetic and emotional challenges.
How long will the results of tuberous breast correction last?
The improvement to the appearance of the breasts is usually permanent, but any weight fluctuations, pregnancy, breastfeeding, or ageing can affect how the breasts look.
Is breastfeeding possible after tuberous breast correction?
Any cosmetic breast surgery procedure, particularly one that addresses the nipple size or position, can affect the ability to breastfeed. However, women with tuberous breasts often find breastfeeding challenging anyway, so this will be taken into account when deciding to have surgery.
What is recovery after tuberous breast correction like?
Complete recovery can take several weeks, but most patients return to normal activities within two weeks. Dr Fazel will provide guidelines tailored specifically to your needs.
